The Kingborough Knights have moved to the top of the Kookaburra Cup ladder and third in the overall standings after Saturdays emphatic win against the Glenorchy Magpies at the Kingston Twin Ovals.

After captain Harry Evans won the toss and elected to bowl, Glenorchy were bowled out for 125 in 34.1 overs. Cam Wheatley bowled superbly and with great pace taking 3/46 off his 10 overs, with the forever reliable Clive Rose taking 1/18 off his 10 overs. Other multiple wicket takers included Liam Ward and Tom Martyn who took 2 wickets a piece. The fielding effort was improved from the week prior, this was highlighted when a diving Alex Vincent combined with Tom Martyn for a fine catch in the deep.

In reply the Knights needed to reach the target within 25 overs to secure a double bonus point victory. The Knights reached the total scoring 4/125 off 22.3 overs, with opener Mitch Backhouse top scoring with 71 off 56 balls in what was a man of the match performance. Mitch’s ability to cleanly strike the ball was on show and is a credit to the work he has put in throughout the preseason. Other contributors with the bat were Alex Vincent with 18 and Harry Evans with 15. A commanding win which gives the boys a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.

The club also held our annual season launch on Friday evening with Mitch McPherson from Speak Up StayChatTy guest speaking. Club Coach Tim Scott announced his coaching panel for the year, as well as our grade captains for the season. First grade will be led by Harry Evans, with Nathan Freitag and Clive Rose being vice-captain. Second grade will again be led by Samuel Martyn and Jake Steele will be his deputy. Third grade will again be led by premiership skipper and club legend Bryce Turnbull, whilst Connor O’Brien will captain the u/17s for the season.

The Knights will next face Clarence at Kangaroo Bay on Saturday as the whole club gets underway for season 2016/17. To keep up with all things cricket at the Kingborough Knights be sure to like us on Facebook or follow us on Instagram.
